A solid turn through the rotation for Red Sox

The Red Sox scored four times off Shane Greene in the seventh, including a two-run homer by Andrew Benintendi, the first of his career. Verlander struck out five and walked one with unusual run support. The two-run shot gave him 1,500 RBIs with the Red Sox.

“This was a good day”, he said. The Tigers play in a three game series starting Tuesday against a Minnesota Twins team that Upton is hitting.429 against in 35 at bats this season. Boston has lost just two of its last 10.

The Detroit Tigers’ Justin Upton learned a hard lesson about premature celebrations on flyballs Saturday. Fulmer (10-4) allowed 10 hits, including two homers, and walked one while striking out one.

“We’re in the third inning where we’re working through some things; end up in a second and third situation with two outs and it’s a pick your poison situation with (Miguel) Cabrera and J.D. Martinez”. In a game against the Red Sox, Justin Upton thought he had just hit a game-tying home run and began to celebrate, when he looked back to find that he had instead hit a measly double.

“He’s one of those guys that you don’t want to let beat you”, Detroit catcher James McCann said.

Henry Owens dispatched the Tigers in the second with apparent ease, striking out J.D. Martinez and Justin Upton before issuing a walk to McGehee.

Ortiz hit a hanging inside 0-1 curve into the right-field seats off Daniel Norris (1-2) following a leadoff double by Xander Bogaerts. Tazawa is no longer considered a premier option out of the set-up role and manager John Farrell said he would be low on the pecking order going forward.

Here’s a link to the full video of the home run. Because he lacks an out pitch, it only felt like a matter of time before the Tigers got to Owens, and they did. In fact, he only had seven hits all month before re-entering the line-up on Saturday and continuing his success Sunday. Just because they’ve done it so far doesn’t mean it’s over.

David Ortiz received a standing ovation in his last at-bat at Comerica Park and tipped his cap after a groundout to the right side. The Red Sox made him earn his keep – Verlander threw 98 pitches in six innings – but he was able to hold them at bay. For example, between 2009 and 2015, Porcello commenced 60.3% of opponent at-bats with a strike, found himself in 3-0 counts in 4.2% of all at-bats, and only induced 0-2 counts in 22.7% of all at-bats.

Red Sox: Boston travels to Tampa Bay on Monday, with former Ray David Price (11-8, 4.19) facing his old team in the opener. After all three talked about Ortiz’s impact in pre-recorded videos, they presented him with a large framed photograph from his appearance in the 2005 All-Star Game in Detroit.
