“While the clean-up following Notting Hill Carnival represents a sizeable challenge, it’s one we relish because it’s a real team effort”, Vincent Masseri, senior contract manager for Veolia, said in a statement.
Kensington MP Victoria Borwick said she was “very disappointed that people want to spoil the carnival by using it as a cover to commit crime and inflict bad injuries”.
More than 7,000 police officers worked to maintain order in an operation said to have cost more than £6 million – around £6 for each of the million revellers who attended.
“The organisers need to understand that this event can not carry on regardless”.
“Metropolitan Police licensing officers working at this weekends Notting Hill Carnival have seized over 150 canisters of nitrous oxide. the canisters have a street value of over 2,000 pounds”, a Metropolitan Police statement said. It’s completely and utterly unacceptable.
A 14-year-old boy was among those facing charges for a string of knife attacks starting Sunday. “I think many Londoners will wonder whether the significant amount of taxpayers’ money spent policing this event is frankly worth it”.
Both of their conditions are not life threatening and no arrests have been made, police said.
The two-day event, started by members of the Afro-Caribbean community, sees costumed performers take to the streets in a parade.
Many of these related to the possession of drugs and offensive weapons but four related to sexual offences and 11 were for assaults on police.
The London Ambulance Service placed treatment beds along the streets to help at least 179 people, 27 of whom were hospitalized.
