Kelly Johnson’s three-run double in the eighth inning broke a tie and lifted the surging New York Mets to a 5-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night.

The wins and the injuries continued piling up for the Mets on Wednesday when Kelly Johnson laced a tiebreaking three-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift NY to a 5-2 win over the Marlins at Citi Field.

Miami Marlins’ Ichiro Suzuki (51) signs autographs for members of the Little League World Series winning team from Endwell, N.Y., during batting practice before a baseball game between the New York Mets and the Marlins, Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, in New York.

The Mets are closing in on the second wild-card spot in the National League and now trail the Cardinals by just 1.5 games.

“It’s a new month, man”, Yelich said. Hopefully September’s better. Nice to get off on the right foot. The Marlins also benefited from Yelich’s defense when he made a diving catch in the second inning to rob deGrom of a two run single.

Unfortunately we didn’t get the win.

“Going on streaks like this is exciting”, said Johnson, who was reacquired from Atlanta this season.

“Obviously we know he’s not a hundred percent”, Mattingly said. “Because one’s going to”. Down 6-1, the Mets made it close, boosted by pinch-hitter Asdrubal Cabrera’s two-run homer in the ninth off Fernando Rodney. Five of the Mets’ 10 Opening Day starters are out for the season and another three have spent time on the disabled list.

Perhaps even more alarming, television cameras captured deGrom waving for team trainer Ray Ramirez to accompany him into the clubhouse at the end of his 102-pitch effort.

“I’m jealous of you guys”, Wright said.

Cabrera told Collins after Wednesday’s win that he could use a respite.

“I can’t throw the ball where I want right now”, deGrom said. “That’s not Jake, and that’s the thing that we’ve been watching. That’s been the big issue”, he said.

Right-hander Jacob deGrom (7-8) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out six over five innings.

Bruce’s 28 home run of the season got the Mets on the board in the sixth.

Bruce hit an RBI single in the eighth and the Mets loaded the bases with no outs. That brought Michael Conforto to the plate as the tying run, but he grounded back to the pitcher for a 1-2-3 double play.

The Mets announced two transactions after the game.

Yelich hit a three-run drive for his 18th homer in the seventh. Conforto, twice shipped down to Las Vegas, sounded very confident upon his return – and not just because he hit a ridiculous.493 (33 of 67) in 17 games in Vegas. The Marlins have scored seven runs in their last three games and three or less runs in nine of their last 12 games. 1B Justin Bour (sprained right ankle) is set to face LHP Wei-Yin Chen (elbow sprain) in a simulated game Friday at the Marlins’ spring complex in Jupiter, Florida. The Marlins promoted four players from Triple-A New Orleans: RHP Brian Ellington, OF Destin Hood, RHP Nefi Ogando and C Tomas Telis.
