Bale not fussed by Pogba eclipsing record

Gareth Bale has insisted he “couldn’t care less” about losing his status as the world’s most expensive player to Paul Pogba and is instead targeting a history-making season with Real Madrid.

Speaking at a gala dinner on Wednesday to launch the year of the Cardiff final, Bale said: “We know the final is in Cardiff and it would be unbelievable to get there”.

The Frenchman, who left United at the end of his contract just four years ago, was resigned by Jose Mourinho for the record breaking fee after months of speculation.

Bale has already been back in fine form for Real this season having scored twice in the club’s opening game of the season against Real Sociedad.

“It would be wonderful to get there”, said Bale, part of the Real side which beat Sevilla at the Cardiff City Stadium to win the 2014 Super Cup.

‘I suppose there’s a little more motivation if there needs to be any more and we’ll be trying to make history in Cardiff.

“That would be nice”, he said.

But he said laughing: ‘I’m not fussed and I couldn’t care less! In fact, the Red Devils have been linked with Bale in previous transfer windows and would surely have to pay more than £89 million to sign him.

Bale is hoping to lead Wales to Russian Federation in 2018 but next summer he wants to back in the capital with Real Madrid for the 2017 Champions League final at the Principality Stadium.

And Bale is expecting a strong British challenge with Premier League champions Leicester joined by Arsenal, Manchester City and his old club Tottenham.

“I haven’t been asked [about Cardiff] yet but the players have had experience of Wales and the weather from the Super Cup”.

‘It is great to see them back, and doing well, I wish them well in the Champions League – until they play us, ‘ he said. We know how we all work, it is a close group of players and a close group of staff.

“It’s exciting times for us all and we all look forward to it”. “No matter what goes on in the transfer market or how much you spend you have to perform on those nights”.
