Luiz return key to Chelsea title bid, says Nevin

A French journalist has claimed that David Luiz is a worse player now than when he left Chelsea two years ago after completing a £32m return to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day.

Oscar was team-mates with the Brazilian defender for two seasons at Stamford Bridge before Luiz moved to the French champions in June 2014, while the pair are also worldwide colleagues.

While the signing of Luiz will no doubt be at the forefront of fans’ thoughts, the news that Diego Costa is staying at Stamford Bridge is also a massive boost for the club.

Chelsea have shocked the football world on transfer deadline day by re-signing David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain.

But Chelsea were forced to turn back to Luiz, now 29, after being frustrated in their attempts to land a new central defender this summer. “I can’t wait to wear the shirt and play at Stamford Bridge again”.

Chelsea had already landed Fiorentina’s former Bolton left-back Marcos Alonso for a reported £23 million earlier in the day.

“It’s a step up in my career”, Alonso said on Chelsea’s website.

“Of course I want to win the Premier League and of course I want to win all the titles again”, he added.

Mario Balotelli’s miserable spell at Liverpool is finally over after he joined French club Nice on a free transfer.

France centre back Mangala also departed to Valencia and Belgium defender Jason Denayer switched to Sunderland for the season.

By the end of the 2013-14 campaign, Jose Mourinho made a decision to use him as a holding midfield.

“I’m delighted to return to Chelsea”.

Tottenham also signed France Under-21 winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou from Marseille for £11mn (B500mn), with Cameroon forward Clinton Njie going the other way on a season’s loan.

The 28-year-old scored 27 goals for the Portuguese side last term and Leicester’s outlay for the Algerian frontman takes their summer spending close to the £70m mark.

Burnley said it broke its transfer record for the second time this month in signing Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick from second-tier Derby but the fee wasn’t disclosed.
