Curfew Lifted From Kashmir After 51 Days-Long Tension in the Valley

Paramilitary troops fired live rounds as residents demonstrated against an earlier raid by soldiers searching for protest leaders in the northern village of Nadihal, a police officer said on condition of anonymity.

At least 69 civilians have been killed and thousands injured, mostly by government forces firing bullets and shotguns at rock-throwing protesters.

He said reports of clashes between stone-pelters and security forces were also received from Chadoora, Kremshora and Mazhama areas of Budgam district.

Authorities have once again imposed curfew in Srinagar and districts including Anathnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kupwara after fresh clashes and protests erupted on Thursday.

A youth Danish Sultan Haroon is feared dead due to drowning in Parimpora area of Srinagar. “The teargas shelling scared him and he fell into the Jhelum from a small bridge and drowned”, they said.

However, three could managed to reach on other side of the river while Danish drowned. Khan said the police has initiated a probe into the incident. Increased movement of vehicular traffic and public was witnessed in nearly all towns and Srinagar city, he said, adding barring stray stone pelting incidents, the situation remained peaceful across the valley. “Three of them have been referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment”. However, it said some people in their effort to disturb the situation pelted stones on police deployments.

As clashes and violence continued in Kashmir on Thursday, authorities reimposed curfew at three places in the Valley, while the government chose to withhold the salaries of the employees who don’t report for work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday spoke about the Kashmir situation in his Mann Ki Baat programme on All India Radio and a day after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met him. He alleged, “She has remained ineffective and clueless throughout this period”.

The delegation will visit Jammu and Kashmir on September 4 and the Home Minister will lead it, a Home Ministry spokesperson said.

Kashmiris in the occupied territory have been observing a strike on the call of Hurriyet leadership till September 1.
