Rex Ryan’s latest slam: I knew I’d be fired with bad Jets

Yep, 100 percent. Yeah, I know Woody [Johnson, the Jets’ owner] wanted to keep me [after last season].

Of course, this is where we point out that Johnson owns the Jets, so he was under no obligation to fire Ryan.

Meet Rex Ryan, coach of the Buffalo Bills, who has no compunction about hiring players and staff with questionable personal histories, including former Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali, claimed on waivers on Wednesday the day after the Jets released him for breaking Geno Smith’s jaw. In an interview with Andrea Kremer of HBO Real Sports, Ryan discussed his departure from the team. “100 percent, I knew I was done”.

Ryan’s full interview airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

Ryan was asked if he believes he could have remained the Jets coach. The Jets brought in Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan as head coach and general manager respectively.

Considering how much confidence Ryan has in himself, it’s pretty uncharacteristic for him to say he knew the Jets weren’t going to be good heading into the season. The way all of New York is accustomed to. I know Woody never wanted to fire me. That’s what Woody wanted.

“Oh, I was done”, he said. “There’s no question Woody wanted that”. “He’s a guy that’s coming in here to help us win football games, and that’s what he comes in here and he does, I could care less what he did in New York”.

“There’s no chance he could have brought in another GM and kept me again”, Ryan said, “There’s no way. There’s no way. It wouldn’t have worked in New York, they weren’t going to allow it. The media wouldn’t allow it, it wasn’t going to work”.
