Brazil Mires Rio Olympics in Police Killings, Protest Repressions – Rights Group
The immediate impact of the Olympic boom was clear as Paes said that commerce increased by 70 percent in Rio’s popular southern district, compared with 2015. As has become usual, the U.S.’s excellence owes much to the success of American women. The U.S. was also atop the medal table at the end of the previous Summer Games, in London, and women were responsible for more than half the gold medals that year as well. At the 2016 Olympics, the Americans won 51 more medals than any other country.

The 2016 Rio Olympic Games took place on August 5-21 in Brazil’s second-largest city and concluded on Sunday.
The Games had many memorable moments, both for Brazilian competitors at home and athletes from around the world.
USA women left Rio with 27 golds – by far the most among any team of female Olympians at these games – and 61 medals total. Of the 121, the women won 61 medals, the men 55 medals and there were five in mixed events.
In a private luncheon hosted by the Vice Chairman of GE, John Rice, IOC President Thomas Bach spoke of the role of The Olympic Partners (TOP), and of GE specifically, in developing transformative infrastructure to support the Olympic Games.
“This is what we expect, it could even exceed this estimate”, said Jun Yamamoto, the ministry of tourism’s director of planning and strategic management, in a statement. “But hopefully in four years we get it together and have a measurement that truly measures the total viewing that these games, or really anything, is bringing in”. Gold, silver, bronze. The atmosphere has been brilliant. And American swimming standout Ryan Lochte and three teammates caused outrage when they falsely claimed they had been robbed at gunpoint in Rio by muggers disguised as police.
But even as Olympics highlight reels continued to loop on Brazilian television, the nation’s attention began to shift back to the capital, Brasilia, where Rousseff will go on trial before the Senate Thursday on charges of fudging the national budget to make the numbers look better. “And I think you’d have to be hibernating under a rock not to understand that”, Winter said at the time.
“Today leaves me with some regrets”, said Lee, putting on a fearless face following his defeat to second-ranked Chen, who became Olympic champion for the first time.

But one man bestrode the whole event, Usain Bolt signing off his extraordinary Olympic career with an unprecedented treble-treble: gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay for the third time in successive Games.
