Garbine Muguruza has lost in the second round in back-to-back majors since winning the French Open title.

In the third round, Harrison will face 44th-ranked Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, the 2006 Australian Open runner-up.

Third-seeded Spaniard Muguruza, who has struggled in the aftermath of her Roland Garros breakthrough in June, slumped to a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova, world number 48.

The defending men’s champion, Novak Djokovic, did not need to play a point Wednesday to reach the third round: His opponent, 49th-ranked Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, withdrew a couple of hours before their match, citing inflammation in his left forearm.

Djokovic will face either Guido Pella of Argentina or Mikhail Youzhny of Russian Federation on Friday for a place in the last 16.

NEW YORK (AP) – The U.S. Open used its new, $150 million retractable roof atop Arthur Ashe Stadium during a match for the first time Wednesday night.

Raonic was a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2014 and at the Australian Open this January. “It was a result of over-exuberance”, said 25-year-old Raonic who claimed that the pain eventually spread to his back and arms and that, as a result, he was unable to carry his bags. There was a lot of nerves and stress.

Raonic battled on multiple fronts today facing an inspired Ryan Harrison, a fired-up NY crowd and painful cramps that afflicted his left leg, right arm and hips. “I’m trying to approach it, you know, just like I would any other match right now”. At one point, during the second set, he required medical treatment for the cramps, which had visibly affected him all match. “There were a few points where I would hold the racket with my left and try to stretch out my right hand in between shots – and that’s not going to work”. He unloaded 43 winners and faced just one break point on his serve as he won 80 percent of the points on his second serve. “He’s a good guy and you don’t want him to be seriously hurt”, he said. “But I was shaking a little at the end”, she said. “You get to go out there and it’s a new match every time you compete”.

It’s something that me or any young player is excited to play on the biggest court in our tour – obviously playing against Novak, against the No. 1 in the world. “I feel like I belong at the top”.

“It’s mental maturity, a little bit of stabilisation with everything around me that is allowing me to play with a sense of calm and also with excitement”, Harrison said.

No. 13 seed Johanna Konta rebounded after collapsing on the court in the second set, to beat Tsvetana Pironkova.

Seventh seed Roberta Vinci of Italy, who finished as the runner-up a year ago, swept aside Christina McHale of the United States 6-1, 6-3. Other top players who won included Madison Keys, Petra Kvitova, and Roberta Vinci.

There was another upset in the women’s draw as the unseeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark ousted ninth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 6-4.
