Witten says Cowboys can win without Romo

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King that he wouldn’t rule out rookie Dak Prescott keeping the team’s starting quarterback job even after Tony Romo returns from injury.

FILE – In this August 25, 2016, file photo, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott passes during warmups before a preseason NFL football game against the Seattle Seahawks, in Seattle. You know what happened to Bledsoe and Brady. “Being able to have Dak step up and be able to take over that role and just support him in any way that we can”.

Let’s all not forget that in preseason the defenses are fairly vanilla and the backups are not often playing a full starter roster.

Prescott will face a massive challenge in his first start and National Football League regular season game since his counterpart in the Giants is Eli Manning, who is a two-time Super Bowl champion and Most Valuable Player (MVP). If the Cowboys aren’t convinced Romo can return October 9 against Cincinnati or that next week against Green Bay it will be hard to justify carrying him on the active roster. Of course he comes across as a hater to many people because it is well known by everyone that watches First Take that Steven A Smith is not too fond of the Cowboys. No better example of how allowing him to develop could benefit the Cowboys is then Tony Romo himself. That’s a rookie, talking to Dez Bryant.

Prescott grew a lot in the eyes of the starting offense, and the coaches, that day.

Receiver Cole Beasley is the Cowboys’ emergency quarterback. “We’ve got a chance to develop that energy, that asset so to speak with Dak”. This is still a gut punch. “I thought he did a particularly good job in this game against Seattle because he certainly didn’t anticipate going in on the fourth play of the game”. “He’s obviously someone of interest to us right now”. The hell with that. That’s because it means putting the fate of their team’s season in the hands of a rookie quarterback.

We’ve also seen the Cowboys use a variety of screen passes and bootlegs with run action created to allow Prescott to read just half of the field. Or, if no setbacks, the Cowboys later have a two-game homestand against Baltimore and Washington. “Nothing really changes. I just gotta continue to do that and make sure I don’t slack up or be lazy and just stay focused”.

“I’m excited for what’s to come”, said Prescott, despite saying he felt bad about the circumstance.
