City now have 18 overseas players on their books, and Toure was the one to miss out, with the likes of Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan and Vincent Kompany – all of whom are yet to play this season – among those included.

The Reds overcame Leicester City in the Community Shield before beating Bournemouth, Southampton and Hull City in what has been a promising start to the new league campaign.

They were drawn in a group with Borussia Monchengladbach, Celtic and Barcelona in the group stages.

Toure remained at City this summer after speculation he could leave.

After the departures of Joe Hart, Wilfried Bony, Samir Nasri, Eliaquim Mangala and Jason Denayer, the Citizens are left with 18 foreigners in Guardiola’s squad.

All of the other 17 foreign players have either featured in Guardiola’s team this season already or are still recovering from injuries, while the Ivory Coast captain has already been dropped from Guardiola’s first three Premier League matchday squads.

Toure, 33, joined City in 2010 and has become one of the most celebrated players in the club’s history.

Late goals from Diego Costa earned Conte wins in his first two Chelsea games against West Ham and Watford, while the Blues cruised to a convincing 3-0 victory against Burnley before the worldwide break to leave the west London club with maximum points and second on goal difference.
