Australia quicks Starc, Hazlewood to miss South Africa tour

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will both be rested from Australia’s upcoming one-day tour of South Africa.

The Proteas could have used this series to try and prepare to handle Starc and Hazlewood on their reciprocal trip to Australia, with the three-Test series beginning in Perth in the first week of November.

Mitchell Starc recently broke a 19-year record for the fastest to 100 wickets in ODIs.

“But if you come here and you play five games like that, on wickets like they have here at the moment, it is going to be very, very tough to draw a big crowd all the time”, Warner said. Hazlewood had a largely disappointing tour, and the selectors will have to debate whether he has the right skills to flourish on the sub-continent, with the tour of India from February in mind. Cricket Australia confirmed on Friday that the pair would not be named in the squad “to allow them time to refresh ahead of the Australian summer”. Opener Dhananjaya de Silva was the only Sri Lankan batsman to offer any resistance to the Australian attack, bringing up his maiden ODI half-century before being dismissed for 76 after mistiming a pull shot off Hastings to Finch at midwicket.

Marsh added that this would serve as a good opportunity for up-and-coming fast bowlers to push for selection.

“With a number of bowlers now coming back from injury it is important for us to continue to build up a battery of quality fast-bowlers for Australia”.

Quick-fire half centuries from opener Aaron Finch and George Bailey helped Australia to a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the fourth one-day global in Dambulla, giving the visitors an unassailable 3-1 lead heading into the final ODI. But, in Hazlewood’s case, his absence comes with the tourists enjoying an unbeatable 3-1 lead.

Smith controversially was rested and sent home after the opening two matches. Australia had a shameful Test series against the hosts losing it 3-0 but made a brilliant comeback in the following One-Day International (ODI) series, winning the series with one fixture still remaining.
