Former Ranger and Devil Scott Gomez retires after 16 seasons

Scott Gomez had a smile on his face and the puck on his stick for most of his 16 seasons.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion and Calder Trophy victor with the Devils announced the decision Wednesday, in a story with the Alaska Dispatch News.

“I’d never think of living anywhere else”.

“But I’m done. I’m done”.

Now at the conclusion of his playing career Gomez has come full circle as he and his family return to his home in Alaska. He became the first Hispanic to play in the National Basketball Association and is one of only a handful of Alaskans to do so.

In 2007, Gomez signed a seven-year, $51.5 million contract with the Rangers.

The two-time All-Star finishes his career with 181 goals and 575 assists in 1,079 regular-season games with the Devils, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators and Blues.

He won the Stanley Cup twice with the New Jersey Devils (2000, 2003), who drafted the Anchorage, Alaska, native in the first round (No. 27) of the 1997 NHL Draft. He had two good seasons in Manhattan, including an All-Star year in 2007-08, before he was traded to Montreal in the deal that brought future captain Ryan McDonagh to NY.

He had eight points in 21 contests for St. Louis early last season before the Blues released him. He also returned to play for the Devils during the 2014-15 season.

The Anchorage native finishes his National Hockey League career with 181 goals, 575 assists, 756 points and a little more than $63 million in earnings.
