Beckham’s Stroll Costly, Rays Lose Finale To Sox

In two starts since coming back from a right shoulder strain, Wright has allowed nine runs on 14 hits in 19 innings. The Sox had Rick Porcello on the mound who has not lost a game this season yet at Fenway Park.

Aaron Hill picked the ideal time to end a hitless drought.Mired in an 0-for-20 slump, the veteran infielder singled home the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning as the Boston Red Sox rebounded after squandering a two-run lead to pull out an 8-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the rubber game of a three-game series on Wednesday.Jackie Bradley, who hit his 22nd home run, provided insurance with an RBI double.Hanley Ramirez, who hit a grand slam to wipe out a 4-1 deficit in the fifth inning, walked against Erasmo Ramirez (7-10) and took second on a sacrifice by Sandy Leon.

“We know where the schedule lies”.

“He had to leave the ballpark”, Farrell said. “We’re looking forward to the challenge”.

However, in the bottom of the eighth, Erasmo Ramirez gave up three hits, including a run-scoring single by Aaron Hill and a run-scoring double by Jackie Bradley Jr. for the win. He doesn’t allow much and the Red Sox usually score a lot, which is how Porcello is 18-3; Boston is 20-7 in the games he has started, and 53-51 in all others.

In the bottom half, Ramirez led off with a walk, Sandy Leon bunted him to second and pinch-hitter Brock Holt singled him to third.

Rays: LHP Drew Smyly (6-11, 4.80 ERA) starts for the Rays in the series finale Wednesday afternoon.

Craig Kimbrel pitched a flawless ninth for the save. But starter Drew Smyly couldn’t hold it, then the bullpen blew it. Ramirez is on pace for 23 home runs, 102 RBIs and 32 doubles. It was his seventh career grand slam, second with Boston.

Craig Kimbrel wasn’t used in the eighth inning. The righty is 37-29 with a 4.53 ERA at his old stomping grounds, a place that Price also called home during the 2014-15 seasons. He also has 18 hits in his last 24 at-bats at Fenway Park.

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to report a win for the Vermont Lake Monsters in NY Penn League action, but excellent pitching changes that as Logan Shore and Brandon Bailey combined on a two-hit gem to lead the Monsters to a 7-1 win over the Tri Vity Valley Cats in Centennial Field in Burlington last night.

Wright yielded four runs. TB starter Jake Odorizzi allowed all three runs on five hits and a pair of BB over six frames.

Jonathan Schoop started the game-winning rally with a two-out walk off Jason Grilli (4-2).

Luke Maile of the Rays hit a two-run homer with two outs in the seventh.

Manager Kevin Cash clearly wasn’t pleased with what happened on the bases – and Beckham was optioned to Triple-A. “They found a way to get on base, get big key hits with guys on base and it just added up, piled up and was very hard for us to overcome”. “That’s why he’s such a special player”, Cash said.

An inning later Hanley Ramirez connected on a Grand Slam homer to put the Red Sox in front 5-4. As I mentioned yesterday, these are the games the Red Sox really have to win if they’re going to make the post-season in an ever-tightening race for both the division and wild card.
