The woman was evacuated by helicopter from the historical site and is now critically injured after suffering back injuries.

It is believed she was hurt after trying to save her dog from being attacked while they were walking on Devenish Island.

The woman’s dog was taken to a veterinarian but later died from its injuries.

The Enniskillen RNLI crew were performing training exercises at the time and were tasked by Belfast Coastguard to assist.

“It was deemed that Rescue 118, Sligo’s Coastguard helicopter, was needed to transport the lady”, RNLI spokesperson Stephen Ingram told BBC NI.

Last night, none of the local representatives contacted by the Belfast Telegraph were aware of the identity of the injured woman but all expressed their horror at the attack and offered their sympathies to the victim.

“And if it had a calf, it might have been acting protectively if it believed the pet dog was a threat”.

And in April, Marian Clode was killed by a stampeding cow enjoying a walk in the countryside during an Easter holiday with her husband, daughter, son-in-law and two grandkids.
