British media reported that Chelsea were on the verge of paying the highest fee of the day – in excess of 30 million pounds – to take Brazilian defender David Luiz back to Stamford Bridge from Paris Saint-Germain.

While Chelsea sold the 29-year-old for around 50 million pounds ($84 million in 2014), the London club has re-signed him on a three-year contract for about 20 million pounds ($26 million) less.

“I’m very happy. It’s a step up in my career and I think this is the ideal place for me to continue developing”, Alonso told Chelsea’s website.

Chelsea have shocked the football world on transfer deadline day by re-signing David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain.

But with his position at PSG under threat from compatriot Marquinhos, new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has brought him back to Stamford Bridge for a reported fee of 32 million pounds. “I can’t wait to wear the shirt and play in Stamford Bridge again”.

The Luiz deal came a matter of hours after Chelsea signed former Bolton left-back Marcos Alonso from Serie A outfit Fiorentina for £23m.

Luiz joined the Blues from Benfica for £21.3m in January 2011 and made 143 appearances for the club.

Speaking shortly after signing his five-year contract, a joyful Alonso expressed how easy it was to make the decision to join the Blues. “It is an interesting move and I hope he will help us win titles.

He’s probably coming back a worse player than when he left”.

While the final day of the transfer window is stressful for some clubs, others like to use the hectic day and the fans’ eagerness for new signings to have some fun.

“Namely Eric Bailly, a young man who is already a very good defender but in time will be an exceptional one”.

Sunderland were one of 13 English clubs to set a new club record during the window, signing 22-year-old Gabon midfielder Didier Ndong from French side Lorient for a confirmed fee of £16mn (B727mn).
