September is Hunger Action Month, and the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is kicking off the nationwide awareness campaign by distributing fresh fruits and veggies, protein, canned goods, and other nutritious items to more than 1,000 Northwest Indiana residents in need of food assistance. This year the campaign will focus on the strong connections between hunger and health.
“We believe it’s important that the people we serve have access to enough healthy food to reach their full potential; especially our children, who can not grow, succeed or learn on an empty stomach”, said John Sayles, Vermont Foodbank CEO.
The donation will provide funding to assist in the transportation and program needs of the food banks and agencies, including supporting emergency food boxes, senior feeding initiatives and kids’ backpack programs, the grocer said in an announcement. “The Food Bank distributed 3 million pounds of produce to hungry people in the Mahoning Valley previous year”. “I’ve seen firsthand the anguish that food insecurity and hunger can cause”.
September is Hunger Action Month and local delegates and council members volunteered at FASWV’s facility in Salem to help kick off the month.
