Speaking to businesspeople in China’s commercial capital of Shanghai following meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing, Trudeau said he told both men that acceptance of diverse perspectives would strengthen China.

Canada’s worldwide trade minister says the rules governing shipments of Canadian canola to China will remain in place until both countries can reach a new agreement on acceptable import standards.
China, which accounts for about 40 per cent of Canadian canola exports, was scheduled to implement new regulations on September 1 that allows one per cent of dockage per tonne of canola. China is Canada’s largest canola buyer with 87 per cent of its total canola imports coming from Canadian growers.
The situation of Kevin Garratt, a Canadian man who has been jailed in China for the past two years on suspicion of spying, is another prickly matter. Garratt’s family released a statement on Wednesday expressing their frustration with the Canadian government’s inability to secure his release.
While in Beijing, the Prime Minister also met with senior business leaders from the China Entrepreneur Club to promote investment into Canada.
Later in the eight-day visit to China, Trudeau will attend the G20 leaders’ summit in Hangzhou.
“Closer ties between the two countries will make it easier for them to have regular, frank talks about governance, human rights and the rule of law”.

A diplomacy expert in Beijing said Canada probably based its decision on the bank’s solid first lending projects announced in June.
The deals signed on Thursday involve companies in sectors from seafood to clean technologies, the trade minister said ahead of a speech by Trudeau.
“I’m here in China this week to talk about all of the great partnerships that we’re working on, and that are going to happen between Canada and China”, Trudeau said in his brief remarks. China, after all, is already Canada’s second-largest trading partner behind the USA and, despite its slowing growth, remains on track to one day eclipse America as the world’s largest economy.
The move came during a five-day trip to China by the prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who is seeking to burnish trade, business and political ties with Beijing. In a February poll conducted by Nanos Research, 76 percent of Canadians said they held a negative impression of the Chinese government.
