Rio Olympics: Dancing broccoli good for NBC

International Olympic Committee vice president John Coates of Australia acknowledged the games have not run as smoothly as desired.

The six award winners will be announced during the Team USA Awards presented by Dow, Best of the Games, to be held in late September in Washington, D.C. The awards show will be televised on NBCSN on October 4 from 10-11 p.m. ET.

Well, if that’s the case, Team USA didn’t get the memo.

French boxer Tony Yoka triumphed against Joe Joyce to win super-heavyweight gold on Sunday, adding to the lightweight title won by fiancee Estelle Mossely.

The athletes produced the goods – Bolt with three more gold medals to take his career tally to nine, Michael Phelps with five more golds for a total of 23, and gymnast Simone Biles with four golds.

The U.S. dominated the medal count, a rare romp in a non-boycotted games. She won three golds and silver, often winning by wide margins and also shattering the world record in the 400 meter individual medley. Allyson Felix got her record fifth gold as part of the 4×400-meter relay. While the US women’s basketball team claimed its sixth consecutive Olympic gold medal on Saturday. No amount of Olympic gold compares to saving lives. This was his third gold medal for the third time – a ideal record. And so it was with Brazil’s final flurry of gold as well.

Jack Laugher and Chris Mears claimed GB’s first ever Olympic Gold in driving. He flew out of the gate and led the race from start to finish, crossing the finish line in 34.642, over a half a second ahead of the rest of the field.

In the pool, Michael Phelps swam into retirement, the United States great adding five golds to a tally that now stands at 23, among a total of 28 medals. In the first week of the Rio Olympics NBC’s live streaming had reached 1.28 billion minutes, surpassing the entire streaming data of the 2012 London Olympics. Moradi won the gold with a combined total of 403kg.

A record 87 countries won at least a medal in Rio, including a number of first timers – Fiji (gold in Rugby Sevens), Kosovo (silver in women’s judo), Puerto Rico (gold in women’s tennis) and Jordan (gold in taekwondo).

Taking the Olympics to Rio de Janeiro was always considered a bit of a risk.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday congratulated Brazil, the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian people, the Rio 2016 Local Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for having successfully concluded the 2016 Olympic Games. Ryan Lochte’s escapades involving what appear to be fabricated or exaggerated reports of being robbed at gunpoint.

The U.S. women’s eight extended its gold-medal reign to 11 straight Olympic and world championship titles, winning its third straight Olympic gold medal. The women’s all-around team also made history, as they took gold with the most diverse women’s team to represent the United States.

“We weren’t sure we were going to have that kind of success coming in”, said USOC CEO Scott Blackmun, noting the track and swimming teams had plenty of first-time Olympians.
