Mets’ deGrom likely to miss next start with sore forearm

Another starting pitcher the Mets were counting on for this season, Zack Wheeler, was shut down in his rehab from Tommy John surgery last month and is not expected to pitch for the club in 2016.

An MRI taken Friday came back negative, and deGrom will start throwing again once his discomfort subsides, the Mets said in a press release. “There is a little inflammation, try to get rid of that and get throwing”.

Terry Collins avoided questions from reporters Friday about deGrom’s health and when the pitcher will make his next start. His two starts before Thursday were troubling, as he gave up 12 hits to the Cardinals and 13 to the Giants in a total of only 9 2⁄3 innings.

Montero had a spot start for deGrom on Monday against the Marlins and tossed five scoreless innings, although Montero also walked six batters and threw 100 pitches. Collins said after the game he was not aware of the meeting when asked about it by reporters. “I have nothing to say at this time about Jake”. He went through a great stretch for several months and was considered part of the NL Cy Young conversation through an August 13 outing that left him with a 2.29 ERA.

DeGrom, who allowed three earned runs in five innings Thursday night while pitching on seven days’ rest, said he’s been struggling with his mechanics and could not locate his fastball in the way he’s accustomed. Opponents are hitting.443 against him in that span.

DeGrom has been solid in 2016, though, nothing like the Cy Young contender he was last season.

Collins did say he expects Steven Matz will resume throwing on Monday in Port St. Lucie after the team leaves NY for Cincinnati. Matz had been scheduled to return from the disabled list Thursday, but shoulder irritation prevented him from starting. It’s insane. I have no idea what is happening with deGrom, but this doesn’t sound good. But, he didn’t. He alluded to something going on and it would obviously be bad. He might not even miss his next start. Matt Harvey was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome in June and underwent subsequent season-ending surgery.
