The Chinese official media has been saying that the focus of the G20 summit will serve as a vital platform for reversing the trend of trade protectionism and giving new impetus to global trade growth.
In an article for the state-run China Daily on Thursday, Mr Liu made no direct reference to Hinkley, but said “a number of steps need to be taken in order to maintain the momentum in the relationship” between London and Beijing.
Erdogan arrived in Hangzhou on Saturday for the 2016 G20 summit, set to be held Sunday through Monday. President Xi Jinping will attend the opening ceremony of this year’s B20 Summit and deliver a keynote speech.
The Paris Agreement could well be remembered as “the moment we finally chose to save our planet”, Obama said in Hangzhou, China as he made the announcement, NBC News reported.
The B20, held in the two days leading up to the economic leaders’ summit, involves more than 800 business leaders from 32 countries and 26 worldwide organisations.
The summit which concludes on Monday comes amid a sluggish global economy, a rise in populism driven by people feeling left out of globalisation, growing concern over violent extremism, China’s muscle-flexing in the South China Sea and the U.S. presidential election. “We need put on our best face, Hangzhou’s most lovely face, for the entire world”, said Liu.
Putin and President Barack Obama do not have a meeting scheduled, but they are expected to meet on the summit’s sidelines.
Described as the “most attractive and elegant city in the world” by 13th-century traveler Marco Polo, Hangzhou’s island-dotted West Lake has been celebrated by Chinese artists for centuries.
Chinese leaders see it as an opportunity to stake their claim for greater influence in global governance, since the G20 not only represents more than 80 per cent of the world economy, but includes developing countries that Beijing counts as friends.
China is Turkey’s third-largest trading partner, though the two countries have clashed over China’s handling of Uighur minorities who share cultural ties with Turkey.
Before May became prime minister in July, Britain had expended huge diplomatic energy courting Chinese investors to finance billions of pounds of infrastructure projects, described by Xi as a “Golden Era” of relations between the two countries.
