East Coast threatened by Hermine

“While the initial pass of the storm provides a glancing blow, additional wind and rain could affect a slightly larger area”, the weather service said. All six scheduled games were held throughout the county, said Theo Helm, a spokesman for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

The storm could strengthen again over water and bring heavy rain to the south eastern and mid-Atlantic states over the next 48 hours, the centre said.

New Jersey, still mindful of devastation from super storm Sandy in 2012, was on high alert as emergency officials advised residents to prepare for flooding, high winds and a surge of seawater.

“These rains may cause life-threatening floods and flash floods”, it said.

Projected rainfall ranged up to 25cm in parts of northern Florida and southern Georgia, with 10cm to 25cm possible along the coasts of Georgia and the Carolinas by Monday.

In Central Florida, The National Weather Service is investigating reports of a tornado that ripped trees out of the ground in the Winter Garden area.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said crews began assessing damages Friday afternoon and said the storm cut power to about 253,000 customers. Since this is a holiday weekend, we are asking our residents and visitors to be aware of the forecast and to use common sense throughout the weekend.

Hours after Hurricane Hermine made landfall in Florida, the weakened storm is now working its way up the East Coast.

Tropical storm wind gusts possible Friday evening… mainly north of I-16 and along the coast. On this current track, Hermine should move over northeast North Carolina late tonight and move over the Atlantic Saturday. The National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm watches and warnings as far north as the Connecticut-Rhode Island border.

The hurricane center said that tropical storm force winds extended 185 miles from the center of circulation – mainly to the south and east.

Hurricane Hermine has wreaked havoc across Florida, knocking out power to almost 300,000 homes and businesses, flooding low-lying areas and raising concerns about the spread of the Zika virus from pools of standing water left behind.

As of midday Friday, more than 30 million people from Florida to NY were under tropical storm watches and warnings through the weekend.

An estimated 325,000 people were without power in Florida and more than 107,000 in neighboring Georgia, officials said. As of 8 p.m. Friday night, the state Emergency Management Division said the only flooding reported in the Midlands was some in the Sumter area, but it was in areas that are prone to flooding. More than 150,000 Big Bend and South Georgia residents experienced power outtages, and many are still dark.
