Dallas Cowboys Tony Romo Injured

The Dallas Cowboys on Saturday announced that their superstar quarterback Tony Romo has injured his back resulting to a broken bone.

Garrett did not rule Romo out for the opener against the Giants, but reports are rampant that Romo will miss 6-10 weeks, and it is safe to assume he will not be suiting up to face the Giants in 16 days.

Whether Prescott can continue his preseason momentum, the Cowboys must serious consider how large a role Romo plays in their future.

He also had a ideal passer rating in their game against the Miami Dolphins, so everyone in Dallas, including Jones, seems ready to start 2016 with Prescott as their starting quarterback.

It’s the latest in a long line of injuries for Tony, who missed 12 games in 2015 after breaking his collarbone twice.

Prescott was impressive enough in the first two preseason games to make owner and general manager Jerry Jones comfortable with him as Romo’s backup, rather than bringing in a veteran.

Former 49er Smith completed 20 of 30 passes for 181 yards before Nick Foles came in to start the third quarter. Jones and his son, executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones, have said they are comfortable giving Prescott a shot as the starter.

The Giants were already set to face a Cowboys team in Week 1 that would be without several key defensive players.

There isn’t a timetable for Romo’s recovery as it stands right now, but it seems like a reasonable guess that he won’t available for at least the first few games of the season. The quarterback has had back issues before, requiring surgery in 2013 and missing a game due to transverse process fractures in 2014.

One option the Cowboys have is keeping Romo on the 53-man roster for the duration of his injury. He also has two rushing touchdowns and 53 yards on the ground on seven carries. The Cowboys will look for veteran help at backup in Romo’s potential absence.

And that means the Cowboys may have a hard decision to make when Romo recovers later this season. Later, Romo said he was OK.

Selected in the fourth round out of Mississippi State in this year’s draft, Prescott was expected to begin his National Football League career holding the clipboard behind Romo.
