Neymar, 24, scored the winning penalty in the shootout, after scoring Brazil’s only goal during normal time in the Maracana.

But it was anything but an easy tournament for Neymar, with fans openly criticizing him and comparing him unfavorably to Brazilian women’s player Marta, who also wore the iconic No. 10 jersey for Brazil at these Olympics. It has been a dream for the Host nation, to be able to host the Olympics and also win gold in soccer.
Brazil goalkeeper Weverton celebrates with Neymar at the Maracana Stadium.
So far Neymar had been the most active in the Brazilian team against a Germany with a strong defense – electrical, skilled and dynamic.
The sides were evenly matched but things changed in the second half and it was the Germans who deservedly took the lead three minutes into the second period.
“Obviously this tournament had a special meaning for Brazil”, Neymar said.
The no.2 ranked Germans scored two goals in the second half, and although the Swedes got a goal back they could not snatch an equaliser that would have taken the game into extra-time.
Pele played an integral role in three of Brazil’s five FIFA World Cup triumphs, but the nation had never tasted Olympic glory prior to their meeting with Germany at the Maracana.
While Neymar didn’t disclose his reasons for stepping down he did say “now my critics will have to shut up” according to ESPN FC.
‘This is a contribution to the national team but the situations are different, ‘ said Olympic team coach Rogerio Micale after his side beat Germany on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Saturday’s final.
“I can’t begin to describe them [my feelings]”, he said.
After eight flawless kicks, Nils Petersen had the misfortune of seeing his shot saved by Weverton.
The victory immediately went some way to repairing the damage done two years before against the same opposition – the night of their 7-1 World Cup semi-final humiliation.
“Brazil welcomed the world with open arms and showed everyone our special way of life – in both work and play”, the 75-year-old said in a separate tweet.

After his penalty earned Brazil a memorable triumph, securing the only worldwide honour the country had yet to win, the 24-year-old told SporTV: “Today I have become a champion, and I give up the captain’s armband”.
