UPS ups U.S. rates

In earlier fashion than usual, UPS yesterday rolled out United States rate changes that will go into effect in the coming weeks and months.

In a release announcing the increases, UPS said it is continuing to invest “in the speed, scope and coverage of our transportation network”.

United Parcel Service announced Thursday it would raise the rates for US ground and air shipping services by an average 4.9% starting December 26.

UPS said Thursday that the extra money will help pay for expansion and improvements.

UPS also changed the size of packages for which an additional handling charge kicks in on UPS Air and global packages: 48 inches instead of 60 inches.

“This change is being implemented due to the additional handling required for these types of packages in the UPS network”, UPS said at the time.

In addition, UPS Freight announced that the same average net of 4.9 percent general rate increase will take effect on this September 19. “The timing of this announcement comes a month and a half earlier than last year’s rate increase announcement (10/16/15)”, analyst Schneeberger wrote.
