Two correctional officers are in critical condition after being shot Saturday morning at the Fresno, California County Jail.

Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti said about an hour after the 8:39 a.m. shooting that the injured were taken to Community Regional Medical Center and their conditions were not known. Police have not identified a suspect, but several media outlets reported a suspect is in custody. “And I just couldn’t believe this was happening”. Police say about 15 visitors were in the lobby at the time Vang entered.

“This is insane. This isn’t supposed to happen”, Rodriguez said as she struggled to compose herself after what she had seen. He stayed in a hallway until sheriff’s deputies and Fresno police responded to the lobby.

Fresno County Supervisor Henry R. Perea visited the hospital soon after the injured officers arrived. In 1998, they said he was sentenced to 19 years in prison on multiple rape charges involving victims aged 14 and under.
