Chicago Bears reward OG Kyle Long with $40 million contract extension

The Chicago Bears are in good shape from a salary cap perspective heading into 2016, and on Saturday, amidst the flurry of roster moves, the team announced they have signed Pro Bowl offensive lineman Kyle Long to a significant contract extension.

Long was already under contract through the 2017 season, but the Bears wanted to be proactive with one of their best players, now back in his normal position. Long was drafted by the Bears in 2013 out of OR and has made the Pro-Bowl in each of his three seasons in the league.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Long and the Bears worked out a deal today to keep him in Chicago for the next four years and pay him $40 million.

Was signing Kyle Long to a contract extension a smart move for the Chicago Bears? The 27-year-old played right guard in 2013-14 and then made the move to right tackle prior to the 2015 season.

The extension reportedly also guarantees the three-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman $30 million – the most among National Football League guards.

Long has been battling a shoulder injury for much of the preseason but is expected to return this week.
