Ace showdown: Bumgarner, Giants knock off Arrieta, Cubs 3-2

It was probably the loudest crowd the Giants have seen since Game 7 of the 2014 World Series. The Giants purchased the contract of the veteran right-hander, who signed a minor league contract with the club on August 19.

Rafael Gaglianone kicked a 47-yard field goal with 3:47 left, and Wisconsin staved off No. 5 LSU’s desperate last-ditch drive for a 16-14 win on Saturday in a game that dealt an early blow to the fifth-ranked. When Madison Bumgarner is on the mound and when they play the way they know how, they believe they’re as good as anybody, even with the second half record pulling them down.

Unfortunately for the Cubs, the team had no answer for Madison Bumgarner. “And we’re planning on being there”.

“It was one we definitely wanted and needed”, catcher Buster Posey said.

“I think the one thing you’d like to get back is Crawford going to third base unencumbered”, Maddon said. Lester along with cohorts Jake Arietta and Kyle Hendricks are all viable candidates for the award and I’m sure they’d agree with Lesster on his “ring over Cy Young” sentiments. While today was the same result- except they were on the losing end this time. “It’s all about coming out here every day and giving it your all”.

Bumgarner (14-8) allowed two runs and five hits in his fourth victory in his last five starts.

RAYS 7, BLUE JAYS 5 (at St. Petersburg, Fla.) – Matt Duffy’s three-run double highlighted a five-run sixth inning and Tampa beat Toronto for the second straight game The big outburst came against right-hander Marco Estrada, who had given up just two singles in the first five innings. After getting the out at first, Brandon Belt threw behind Rizzo at second and caught him with a rare mistake. It was reminiscent of Posey’s slide in Miami, although not almost as painful.

Willson Contreras and Kris Bryant both collected two hits on the day for the Cubs, who ended their five game winning streak.

“The outing was average”, Arrieta said. Arrieta tapped a roller to third and Nuñez tried to barehand it.

“I thought the momentum had changed”, Crawford said in a deadpan. “I know “Bum” had to be on fumes there that last inning, but he found a way to get a big strikeout there, and the boys finally got a couple of breaks”.

That kicked off a tense hour at Wrigley.

Hunter Strickland got Addison Russell to line out with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, and closer Santiago Casilla inherited a runner at first base in the ninth after left-hander Will Smith issued a walk to Anthony Rizzo. After Bumgarner struck out Dexter Fowler to end the inning, he continued to bark in Cuzzi s direction.

“I hear [about the scrutiny]”, Arrieta said. Crawford singled, stole second and third (the latter uncontested) and Jake wild-pitched him home. He threw to Crawford, who reached behind his back while making a tag to complete a rally-killing double play.

Bumgarner struck out 10 batters to help the Giants beat the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The afternoon win allowed players to let loose a little.

So what would facing Bumgarner in October be like? Bumgarner threw some delightfully subtle shade at first base umpire Phil Cuzzi, a longtime Giants nemesis, saying that his balk “was no surprise”.

At the plate: Crawford is now six-for-six on stolen base attempts this season. Asked about taking two bags, Crawford smiled and channeled Jarrod Dyson.

The good vibes could be crushed in the series finale, but on a day when Bumgarner outgunned the reigning Cy Young Award victor and the Giants held off a team that should win 100 games, players weren’t shy about looking down the line.

“It doesn’t take much to get us started on the right track”.

“It happens from time to time”, Arrieta said. “We’ve still got our division in our sights, but it’s about getting in”. “Anybody that tells you different is lying to you”.
