Randy Gregory’s 10-game suspension is still under appeal

Gregory’s status for the 2016 season remains in limbo.

Gregory was appealing the 10-game suspension handed down by the NFL for another violation of the league’s Policy and Program of Substances and Abuse.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory failed his fifth drug test – fourth with the Cowboys – and was hit with a four-game suspension back in February, but a missed drug test while in rehab could have potentially pushed that sentence even further. Gregory still is, however, suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. However, the additional 10-game suspension wouldn’t kick in until the appeals process is complete, which it wasn’t as of early Sunday afternoon.

The Star-Telegram, in its report that Gregory won his appeal, added that Gregory is still in rehab. Another failed drug test would’ve resulted in a 10-game ban.

It was reported in every nook and corner, except the league never issued a formal statement. Considering he hasn’t practiced with the team this summer, there’s a real chance that Gregory isn’t in playing shape. After missing training camp to address his health, Gregory’s conditioning will be one factor in how soon he’s ready to play whenever he’s eligible to return. The Cowboys are in need of pass rushers with Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence both suspended.

“He’s got gifts. He understands he has gifts, God’s gifts”, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in May. In limited action, the 23-year-old notched just 11 combined tackles and zero sacks. Remember, the Cowboys will also be without starting quarterback Tony Romo for the foreseeable future, so any relatively good news the Cowboys can get nowadays is great.
