Hermine kills 2, ruins beach weekends in northward march
Tropical Storm warnings remained in effect for most of the Jersey coastline, as the storm is expected to bring heavy wind and flooding. The storm was centered 90 miles east of Duck, North Carolina.

Sunday morning is pleasant so far besides wind and rough surf – but the calm is deceptive, as Delaware’s shore points brace for the brunt of the flooding Hermine is expected to cause.
By 2 p.m. Saturday, Hermine’s top sustained winds had increased again to 70 miles per hour as it moved east at 10 miles per hour.
The governor warned Hermine will cause significant pounding by ocean waves and light to moderate flooding through Sunday night and Monday high tides, especially in back bays.
Hermine, the first hurricane to make landfall in Florida in 11 years, swept ashore on Friday near the town of St. Marks with winds of 80 miles per hour (129 kph).
“The combination of a storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline”, the Hurricane Center said in a morning advisory.
Accuweather.com forecast the strongest winds and heaviest rain would stay offshore much of Sunday, causing risky surf and coastal flooding.
Looking ahead, Manzo says, “The risk for major storm surge then spreads northward to southern New England on Sunday night and Monday…”
New York City planned to close its beaches Monday because of rip currents, and the ban could extend into Tuesday, depending on weather conditions, officials said.
“Out of an abundance of caution for concertgoers, staff and the bands, and everyone else involved, we have made a decision to cancel this weekend’s beach concerts”, Guardian said in a statement issued Friday night.
“There won’t be much rain in New Jersey, if any”, said Carlie Buccola, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
Forecasters have revised their rainfall forecast to less than one additional inch for the region.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday activated the state’s emergency operations center and ordered Long Island’s ocean beaches closed as of Sunday.
What that means for us in the coastal communities of Rhode Island, Massachusetts including the Cape and the Islands, is that the onset of near tropical storm force winds will likely be slightly later than previously anticipated.
The weather service has advised people to stay away from flooding-prone areas – particularly, anywhere near the water.
“I always try to err on the side of caution, so I’m more relieved than I am concerned, and we can always ramp up, if it were to turn westward, we can always ramp up the need for evacuating people in short order”.
Late last week, Hermine rolled out of the Gulf of Mexico and across northern Florida as the first hurricane to hit the state in over a decade.
The almost 3-mile long bridge crosses the Intracoastal Waterway and is the main link from the North Carolina mainland to the Outer Banks.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has also declared a State of Emergency, saying “although this storm will not hit us directly, the storm could potentially be worse in some ways”. In North Carolina, trucker was killed when his rig overturned Saturday because of high winds on a bridge.
