Prescott is being pressed into service thanks to the back injury suffered by Tony Romo in preseason that could see him sidelined for as long as 10 weeks.

The Cowboys could be facing punishment from the National Football League for negotiating with Mark Sanchez while he was still under contract with the Broncos. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract can’t be signed until Sunday.
According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, the Cowboys had permission to speak to Sanchez as Denver was trying to trade him.
General manager John Elway acquired Sanchez from the Philadelphia Eagles after Peyton Manning retired in March and Brock Osweiler bolted to Houston in free agency two days later.
The Broncos’ release of Sanchez didn’t come as much of a shock after he lost the starting job to Trevor Siemian.
The Cowboys said they would be in the market for a veteran quarterback as soon as backup Kellen Moore broke his right ankle in a training camp practice. He finished the preseason 21-of-62 passing for 318 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Rookie Dak Prescott will start in Romo’s absence, and Sanchez, who was cut Saturday by the Denver Broncos, will be the backup. To be eligible for a return from IR, the player must be on the initial 53-man roster.

The Cowboys waived a pair of former fifth-round picks in receiver Devin Street (2014) and defensive end Ryan Russell (2015).
