NFL Practice Squad Rules: New Orleans Saints
In 2014, the two sides had already agreed to expand practice squads from eight to 10 players for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, but the agreement was limited to the past two years, so a new agreement was necessary. Some may end up on other teams, while many should wind up on the team’s practice squad.

Everything you need to know about the practice squads. The Rams did just that almost two years ago to the day for a QB named Case Keenum. Today, the eligibility of who can be on a practice squad and how long they can be there is tricky, especially because the rules are always changing. If two players are very close in Pace’s eyes, he may opt to release the one that he could potentially stash, while keeping ineligible players on the full roster.
The Packers reportedly informed a few players on cut-down Saturday that they would like to bring them back aboard on the practice squad if they clear waivers.
[5] A player may not sign with an upcoming opponent unless he does 6 days before the game or 10 days on a bye week.
A player is allowed on the practice squad for up to two years, with one year counting as six weeks in a season.
How big is the practice squad?
Practice squad players can be paid any amount by teams as an incentive to not sign to another team’s roster.
Up to four practice squad players may have two years of accrued time in the NFL.
To protect their players from other teams, or because they really like the potential of a given player, some teams pay their roster squad players significantly more.
The NFL and NFLPA have made a few changes in the practice squad rules for 2016. Therefore, for example, the Raiders can not sign a player they want on their practice squad if the Bears want to sign the same player to their gameday roster. To accrue a season, a player has to be on an NFL regular roster of 53, an inactive PUP list (regular season version of PUP) due to an NFL football related injury, or an IR list for at least 6 regular season games.
All but two of the players released by the Packers on Saturday should have practice squad eligibility remaining. Fans won’t see them in games, but for many, the practice squad is a stepping stone to the big-time of the league.
One thing that has to be on his mind is which players are eligible to be signed to the practice squad if they clear waivers. This states that if a player is promoted from the practice squad for a game because a club was given a roster exemption due to confirmed or suspected cases of contagious disease among its players, the player remains on his practice squad contract, but will be paid 1/17 of the league minimum salary.

Practice squad players are free to sign with any team at any time but must be immediately added to the 53-man active roster of the new team. There is no maximum allowed PS salary, but as I said, PS salaries count against the cap, so PS players are rarely paid more than the minimum. Bear in mind he will then receive 3 weeks pay even if released.
