The coach of wrestler Sakshi Malik, who won bronze medal at Rio, will be given Rs 10 lakh, an official spokesman said.
Sindhu’s homecoming Monday included a ride through Hyderabad, the technology hub in southern India, in an open-top bus.
Sindhu has now become the second Indian player in badminton to win an Olympic medal after Saina Nehwal, who had clinched bronze in London four years ago.
Air India offered two business-class tickets for Malik and her chosen companion to any destination across the globe in the airline’s existing network.
In her bronze medal match, Sakshi had defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova 8-5. “I hope the remaining wrestlers will also do well”, Sakshi said.
Babita Kumari lost her opening women’s 53 kg category wrestling bout 1-5 against Maria Prevolaraki of Greece and got eliminated from the Games.
When India’s sports authorities and the media sit down in separate rooms to analyse the country’s Rio campaign, they should remember this picture, for this was a moment which perfectly captured the success we did have. “She has really done well and made the country proud”, he said.
Our sportspersons did perform well at the Rio Olympics considering the treatment and infrastructure given to the athletes in India. In both cases, the tickets will be valid for a year.
