The BBC presented a list of promises made by the Better Together campaign including continuing European Union membership, investment in carbon capture programmes, a secure economy and pensions, and the construction of 13 new Type 23 frigates.

“The creativity of the networked young generation is phenomenal”, he said.

The manifesto will include plans for a Universal Service Network created to bring high-speed broadband and mobile connectivity for everyone, including remote rural communities.

It came as Jeremy Corbyn, who is beating Mr Smith in polls of Labour members, held a parallel event in London vowing to “democratise the internet”.

Thornberry, MP for Islington South and Finsbury, said she would “stay loyal” to the democratically-elected leader, despite admitting she did not agree with everything Corbyn had said or done since becoming leader.

“Instead of agitating for a second independence referendum the SNP should focus on the bread and butter issues of government, like getting people back into work and giving everybody a fair chance in life”.

“And they are doing so in the most naked way”.

“In some parts of the country, people have laid their own broadband cable because farmers were fed up with being unable to quickly access the internet to get a reasonable price or sell their products”.

Corbyn’s “Digital Democracy” speech also comes a week after a United Nations report announced that disconnecting people from the Internet is a human rights violation and against worldwide law.

An Open Knowledge Library is also proposed, which would be a free-to-use online hub of learning resources for his proposed National Education Service.
