North Korea fired off three missiles toward Japan on Monday in a show of force as President Obama met with world leaders at the G20 summit in Hangzhou, China.

It also comes at a potentially embarrassing time for North Korea’s only real ally, China, which is now hosting the Group of Nations summit in Hangzhou.

“It seems to be displaying its nuclear and missile capabilities for the G-20 leader’s summit and the North Korean government’s founding day, and is a part of its show of force to continue the military tensions on the Korean Peninsula”.

In early August, another Rodong missile fired by North Korea also traveled about 1,000 kilometers, the longest-ever flight by that missile.

South Korea’s defence ministry expressed “deep concern” about the launch, calling it a “grave threat” to the South’s security.

The DPRK has recently voiced its opposition to the joint military drills conducted by the United States and South Korea in the region which concluded last Friday, with the Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise comprising some 25,000 USA troops.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry says Prime Minister Shinzo Abe approached South Korean President Park Gewn-hye during a coffee break at the G-20 and agreed to cooperate closely.

However, the South Korean president insisted her country is feeling an “unprecedented” level of threat from North Korea.

Reports out of Seoul and Beijing on Monday offered contrasting sides of a disagreement that intensified in July after the South Korea revealed alongside the United States that a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery would be deployed on the peninsula by the end of next year.

The missile, fired from off the northeastern port of Sinpo, flew 500 kilometres (around 300 miles) towards Japan, far exceeding the range of the North´s previous sub-launched missiles.
