In May, 73 people died when two buses and a fuel tanker collided on a highway in Ghazni province.
“20 others were wounded in the crash which set fire to both vehicles in the Jaldak area of Shahr-e Safa district”, Zabul’s governor Bismillah Afghanmal said on Sunday.
Numerous victims, including women and children, were burned beyond recognition in the accident in Zabul province, one of the areas worst affected by the Taliban insurgency.
Drivers on the highway are known to drive at high speeds to avoid attacks, as the Kabul-Kandahar road passes through conflict-prone areas.
He said authorities will transfer critically injured patients to neighbouring Kandahar province.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has, meanwhile, expressed his condolences over the death of the victims in the accident.
Last November, the World Bank signed off a $250m grant to fix roads crossing the Hindu Kush mountains.
