Dallas Cowboys snatch up Denver Broncos castoff Mark Sanchez

The Denver Broncos finalized their practice squad roster on Sunday, signing several players to it including running back Juwan Thompson. Shortly after being cut by the Broncos, the Cowboys quickly scooped up former Eagle Mark Sanchez.

Baltimore also released Keenan Reynolds, Navy’s record-setting quarterback who was trying to move to wide receiver, a veteran signal-caller in Josh Johnson and a 2013 second-round pick in linebacker Arthur Brown.

Sanchez wasn’t the only veteran released by the Broncos.

“It’s always good when you have young guys making the team”, Broncos executive vice president of football operations/general manager John Elway said.

Siemian had been named the Broncos starter for the 2016 season, which will begin Thursday with the defending Super Bowl champions hosting the Carolina Panthers.

Was money a factor in those three moves?

“He’s coming in to learn the offense”, Elway said of Davis. Romo would miss the first seven games if he’s on that list, and Sanchez could take that roster spot. Wide receiver Keenan Reynolds, who had a storied career playing quarterback for Navy, was released by Baltimore. He did that and more as he became the 11th Broncos to notch a quarterback sack in the preseason with a strip-sack of Matt Barkley early in the game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Former Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson, who signed before the preseason finale in case Showers got hurt, was among those waived. He also saw extensive duty on punt returns with nine returns for 61 yards, but muffed a punt against the Vikings that was recovered on the Los Angeles 6 leading to a Minnesota touchdown.

Of that group only Roberson, Lynch, and Bryant played in a regular-season game for the Rams a year ago. Hillman, a 2012 third-round pick, should get a look from teams who want to add depth at tailback even though the Broncos couldn’t find a trade partner for him, either.

He’s eligible for the practice squad due to a National Football League rule that allows teams to have up to four players who have two or more accrued seasons on their practice squad. He was called up to the active roster prior to the AFC Championship Game last season. But the Packers have financial decisions to make up front, with the contracts of left tackle David Bakhtiari and left guard T.J. Lang expiring after this season. The Broncos need some depth along the offensive line and defensive line.
