Noting that there is a “big deficiency” in the quality of education in the country despite the presence of institutions like IITs and NITs, President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said the flow of Indian students to institutions overseas needs to be reversed. “Psychologically, it was a traumatic situation”. Millions of people were uprooted from their homes and lands and forced to migrate to new places and settle down.
Recently, in an interview with CNN News 18, the PM had said, “Leaders of political parties, when they meet me, emphatically tell me let us please keep elections aside”.
“Call me Pranab Sir or Mukherjee Sir”, the 80-year-old veteran politician declared as he walked into a classroom of 60 students.
Emphasising on social performance for economic growth of the country, the former Finance Minister stated that increase in unemployment is not the requirement for the country.
He remembered the “formation” of states by the State Reorganisation of Commission as an “important development” in India’s history.
He also touched upon the emerging idea within the political parties that the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections should be held together.
The Election Commission has also supported the idea of holding simultaneous elections.
Explaining the liberalisation of Indian economy in 1991 to the students, Mukherjee threw light on the condition of the Indian economy immediately after Independence.
Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of second President of the country Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a revered educationist, philosopher and recipient of highest civilian honour of the country Bharat Ratna.

National awards were also conferred to teachers across the country by the President along with Prakash Javadekar, the Minister of Human Resource Development. He said teachers made a big contribution in terms of social responsibility for the country.
