Matt Shoemaker Injury: Updates on Angels Pitcher’s Head and Return
Early runs continued to cost the Mariners on Sunday, as they dropped a second-straight loss to the Angels.

“He’s a guy who has some footprints in the ninth inning”, Scioscia said of his decision to use Bailey. Cruz now has 35 home runs, five from his third consecutive 40-homer season.
Dropping eight of their last 10 games, the Mariners (69-67) appear to be slowly drifting away from playoff contention. “I think we could exhale a little bit”. Albert Pujols hit another home run and six Los Angeles relievers combined to pitch 7 2/3 innings as the Angels won for the seventh time in eight games.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim’s starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker suffered a 105 miles per hour line drive to his right temple while pitching against the Seattle Mariners Sunday.
When Matt Shoemaker crumpled to the ground, bleeding from a 105 miles per hour line drive that had struck him squarely in the head, two dugouts of players and coaches and a ballpark full of fans suddenly were united. His mind went elsewhere with Matt Shoemaker lying on the ground, being tended to by trainers after taking a line drive off his head. After several minutes, with teammates gathered around the mound, Shoemaker was helped to his feet. He was being taken to a local hospital for a CT scan. The initial diagnosis was a slight skull fracture. The Angels tweeted the following message hours after Matt’s injury: “Matt is speaking, interacting [and] doing well considering the trauma”, although he will remain in the hospital overnight to be observed by medical professionals.
Although the Angels have said only that he will continue to be evaluated, his condition is not believed to be serious. “You kind of have to catch your breath for a second”. We’re relieved to hear that it looks like everything is under control. “I’m happy (Angels manager Mike Scioscia) and the organization felt I could handle that opportunity today”. Seager appeared concerned while standing at first base, and eventually joined numerous Angels over near Shoemaker after the play was over.
“It was terrifying”, Seager said. “That was probably the scariest thing I’ve seen on a baseball”. “We thought it would be good for him to get a shot”. That’s well bigger than baseball.
Eventually, Shoemaker was able to stand up and walk off the field under his own power. Relievers Dan Altavilla and Drew Storen finished.
“We’ve got to play better”, manager Scott Servais said bluntly.

“Both of those pitches were up in the zone”, Iwakuma said through an interpreter.
