On the altar, the massive idol of Lord Ganesh is flanked by small idols of Lord Venkateshwara and Lord Krishna. He popularised Ganesh Chaturthi as a national festival to “bridge the gap between Brahmins and “non-Brahmins” and find a context in which to build a new grassroots unity between them”, generating nationalistic fervour in the Maharashtran people to oppose British colonial rule. This year’s idol – which was unveiled to the public on September 2 – sits regally on an owl throne. You can take your pick of course if you are doing this at home, but if in case it is a community or neighbourhood celebration, you need to bow to the wishes of the pandits and do as they direct you.
The fresh aroma of different types of “modak” – Lord Ganesh’s favourite sweet preparation – wafts across streets and roads everywhere as the Ganesh mandals, sweetmeat shops and homes prepare it in abundant quantities to be distributed as “prasad” among the devotees.
At the end of the festival, the idols are immersed into the river or the sea and left to disintegrate.
