The Osmo Mobile’s active track feature locks in an object, or your face, and adjusts to keep it in the frame as you move. Available in different configurations – from the humble original Osmo to the venerable Osmo Raw with the Zenmuse X5R camera – there is now yet another: the Osmo Mobile. That’s a change which has both some major advantages and some disadvantages as well.

The selfie stick has a number of buttons and functions including a joystick that moves the arm that holds the smartphone, a “trigger” which allows you to stop Osmo Mobile from moving, and the ability to switch to selfie mode.

The kit works similar to the DJI Osmo except this new version lacks a built-in camera.

The Osmo Mobile is available as of September 1st, priced at US$299. It uses the capable camera in a smartphone instead of a dedicated camera.

Would DJI’s Osmo Mobile fit in your workflow at all?

According to CNBC, DJI said that the targeted buyers of the Osmo Mobile are bloggers, hobbyists, and journalists.

Simply attach your phone with the included clamp, balance the camera to ensure proper functionality by adjusting the locking knobs and you’re ready to go.

The battery life will give you four and a half hours of continuous use, but of course you’ll need battery power and storage capacity on your iPhone or Android device, too. However, while the device incorporates a 4K camera adapted from the company’s line of drones, the fact is that most people use smartphones to shoot their videos. The phone records the image and acts as the monitor, to record and playback video files. It’s like a selfie stick but with the added functions and features like the ActiveTrack technology, 3-axis gimbal system, full manual camera control, and camera stabilization. And if you’ve already had the opportunity to use an Osmo device, you’ll be totally at home with the Osmo Mobile once your phone is properly balanced, because controls on the Osmo Mobile’s handgrip are near-identical to those on the standalone models.
