The Oscar-winning film “Moulin Rouge!” by Australian director Baz Luhrmann is being developed as a musical for the stage, its producers said Thursday. No timeline or location details have been set, but the creative team is partly assembled: Broadway wunderkind Alex Timbers (Rocky) will direct, with Tony victor John Logan (Red) penning the book.
The stage version will be directed by Alex Timbers, who worked on the Broadway version of Rocky, and written by Bond scriptwriter John Logan.
According to Deadline, work on the project is already well underway, but all other specifics – the show’s production timeline, the cast, which venue might be playing home to the show – will be announced at some point in the future.
Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan, who penned the screenplays for Gladiator and The Aviator, is writing the book, is on board while two-time Tony nominee Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Here Lies Love) will be directing. He falls in love with Satine (Nicole Kidman), the lead courtesan at the Moulin Rouge.
Tony victor John Logan (Red) and Tony-nominated Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher; Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson) are on board to write the book and direct the adaptation, respectively.

“We are also delighted to be partnering with Twentieth Century Fox and Moulin Rouge in this hugely exciting venture”. I immediately recognised the young directors creative spirit and felt we shared similar sensibilities and instincts. “So I’m tremendously happy Moulin Rouge will be under his direction”. Though much of the company’s past work is in specialist animatronics, they produced the stage adaptation of Strictly Ballroom, which premiered at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney in 2014. Let’s face it, the movie had one of the best soundtracks ever.
