United Kingdom teens suspected of killing man from Poland in ‘hate crime’

Police have arrested five young men and boys and are holding them in custody. Yesterday Polish consul conferred with Essex Police.

The attackers also injured another man, who is 43 years old.

Jo Marie O’Reilly, who will attend the Stand Up To Racism vigil, said: “We wanted to do something to show our support for the Polish community within the town, who are all understandably quite shaken up by the event of Saturday”.

“My kids have been with me in the hospital, crying all the time”.

The MP for Harlow and Polish Ambassador have paid their respects to a man who was killed in the town.

Arkadiusz Jozwik was attacked in Harlow on Saturday night and died on Monday from head injuries.

“He was standing eating pizza and they picked on him because of that”.

The Ambassador Arkady Rzegocki said his staff have had to deal with “15 or 16 such situations” since the European Union referendum in June. The young teenagers are so aggressive.

“After the Brexit vote it has got worse”.

In a statement published on Twitter, the Polish Embassy said it had been “shocked” by Mr Jozwik’s death, and was liaising with Essex Police.

He said: “My mum came back from holiday and did not know what had happened. She is really struggling”.

According to figures released by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), there were 331 hate crime allegations in the United Kingdom in the week following the vote compared with the previous average of 63.

A 15-year-old boy from Harlow was arrested on Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of murder and is now in custody awaiting questioning.

Four others were bailed on Monday.

Superintendent Andy Mariner said: “Over the last two months we have received reports of nuisance and anti-social behaviour in The Stow, which have affected the quality of life for residents and shop owners”.

‘They were verbally abused before being assaulted and knocked unconscious.

Police believe a gang of up to 20 boys and girls may have been involved.

‘We know they may find it hard to come forward, but we would encourage them to discuss it with their parents and to contact police.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
