Carson City Sherrif’s Department deputies comfort each other outside the scene of a fatal shooting Saturday, August 15, 2015, in Carson City, Nev., that left an officer and a suspect dead. “I was deeply saddened to hear the news of the untimely death of a Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy and pray for strength and peace for his family and fellow officers during this time of tragedy”.

The suspect was later found dead inside the house.

Furlong said, “while the staff, employees and families of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office have been devastated by this tragedy, law enforcement service levels have remained constant without interruption”.

Deputies responded to a call early Saturday morning around 2 a.m.in the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City. “This is certainly a tragic day for northern Nevada”, stated Officer Tim Broadway of the Reno Police Department.

Deputy Carl Howell was the first Carson City sheriff’s office killed in the line of duty since 1867. Officers who arrived at the scene found a woman who had suffered an injury. Deputy Howell then attempted to meet with 30-year-old Jonathan Pope, who was aware deputies had been called. “Absolutely”, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong told the AP after a vigil Saturday night.

Three children, between the ages of 8 and 13, were evacuated.

‘It’s a small community and we all know each other, ‘ he said.

Howell’s was the department’s first on-duty officer death in more than 50 years, and the response was swift in the sleepy state capital of about 55,000 people.

The unnamed neighbor who witnessed the incident said gunshots woke her up and when she tried to look where it was coming from, the deputy was already falling to the ground after being shot. “We are devastated not only because of the loss of our friend, but for the loss to his family and everyone who was so traumatized that night by the events that happened”. He shot and killed one officer.
