Uganda end 38-year wait, Burkina also qualify

Uganda have ended nearly four decades in the wilderness by qualifying for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

At the weekend all sixteen qualified nations were confirmed for the tournament to hosted by Gabon.

Burkina Faso and Uganda join Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, Zimbabwe and hosts Gabon as qualifiers for the 2017 Cup of Nations. A 5-0 home win over Djibouti on Sunday ensured Togo had the better goal difference despite Emmanuel Adebayor missing a penalty.

DR Congo took control in the second half to whip Central African Republic 4-1 in a top-of-the-table Group B clash and finish five points clear.

Burkina Faso top Group G with 13 points, the same as joint leader Uganda who defeated Comoros 1-0 earlier in the day.

A last-minute victor from Banou Diawara ensured Burkina topped Group D with a 2-1 home victory over nine-man Botswana.

The Cranes qualified as one of the two best group runners-up and will travel to Gabon next year to make their first appearance at the finals of the tournament since 1978.

Jonathan Bolingi and Jordan Botaka scored during the final quarter after the visitor had pulled one goal back through Eloge Enza-Yamissi to trail 2-1 on 62 minutes in Kinshasa.
