Scientists say Singapore Zika is Asian strain, cases reach 200
The Associated Press reported recently that the virus appeared in Asia in the 1960s, “in Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Pakistan, but no widespread cases have been reported and symptoms have typically been mild and similar to dengue and chikungunya, which may have helped mask its presence”.

The babies were born with abnormally small heads, a condition threatening their brain development. The Committee wanted to make sure that there is increased research on sexual transmission and also how long the risk is for sexual transmission of the Zika virus.
New York City will receive more than $700,000; Philadelphia, about $348,000; and Chicago, $200,000.
However, the virus can cause a crippling birth defect known as microcephaly.
The DFA issued the travel advisory following the rising number of cases of Zika infection in Singapore which reached 189 over the weekend.
Currently, Zika-positive patients are isolated in hospitals.
The vast majority of Zika infections have been in Latin America and the Caribbean, with Brazil the epicenter.
The Ministry was reviewing the practice of isolating potential Zika-infected patients, Senior Minister of State for Environment and Water Resources and Health, Amy Khor said.
Acknowledging that the impact of Zika virus is a long term concern, the Committee recommended that the Director General considers developing an appropriate infrastructure and response plan within the World Health Organization to provide longer term coordination and accountability for ensuring an effective response. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika.
“Latest updates from Singapore’s Health Ministry showed that overall, 11 Malaysians have been confirmed to be infected with the Zika virus in the republic”, he said. Additionally, the committee said it has taught people how to control the virus and protect themselves from mosquito bites.
Ninety-five additional mosquito samples were subsequently tested for Zika and those mosquitoes were found to be Zika-free, the officials said.
As of August 26, the CDC had made more than $193 million in funds available to fight the virus. They voted yes, they announced at a news briefing Friday, in part because new infections had been reported in Singapore and Guinea-Bissau.
Congress broke for its summer recess without approving additional funding.
He said that it is likely that this strain has been circulating in the region for decades. “Most have recovered while the rest are recovering well”, the ministry said in a statement.
According to health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the 61-year-old man from Taman Public Jaya in Likas passed away at 5.30pm.
“The cupboard is bare, there’s no way to provide that”, he said at a briefing with reporters in Washington, D.C. The current study adds Zika infection to that list.
Singapore has reported 215 cases of Zika infections, as scientists in the city-state said the virus strain came from within Asia and was not imported from Brazil. The USA, Australia, Taiwan and South Korea have urged pregnant women against travelling to Singapore.
An estimated 80 percent of people infected have no symptoms.

There have also been rare cases of person-to-person sexual transmission.
