Both sides have started with three wins from as many Premier League games, with City leading the way on goal difference.

The 34-year-old, who had played under Mourinho with Italian giants Inter Milan, had earlier rejected offers from Arsenal and Manchester City.

Ibrahimovic signed on a free transfer for United, having come to the end of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

Ibrahimovic told the Daily Mail: “I was close to moving to the Premier League twice – once with Arsenal and then City”.

But the changing of the guards in the Old Trafford and Etihad Stadium hot seats has added more subplots to the North West clash than ever before, with old arch-rivals Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola squaring off once again. I learned a lot from him at Inter.

The 41-year-old took charge of two Manchester derbies last year – the first in April where United won 4-2 at Old Trafford, while October’s fixture ended in a goalless draw.

Ibrahimovic has also held talks with Mourinho about his plans once he hangs up his boots.

“Zlatan is already tapping into Jose Mourinho and planning for the future in the game. He is enjoying picking up a few ideas and he fancies Italy”.
