Kubiak said he isn’t surprised that the competition has remained open this deep into the preseason. But the leaders of the race throughout have been the two with more league experience and knowledge of Kubiak’s system. Sanchez played extremely great from with 9-of-10 from the start but had two fumbles before halftime that could derail his chances of getting the job.

Given Sanchez’s previous history with turnovers during his time with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, the Broncos have not seen enough improvement in ball protection to have him lead the No. 1 offense that figures to serve a complementary role to the team’s No. 1 defense. The more comfortable he gets, the quicker Kubiak can hand over the proverbial keys.
That was evident Monday when Kubiak would not say if Lynch or Sanchez would enter Saturday’s game after Siemian. The game was delayed 30 minutes because of lightning late in the third quarter.
Lewis tore his ACL last November and his status since then has been, well questionable.
