Corbyn is in the middle of a battle against Owen Smith to keep his job as leader of the party.
Smeeth added to the calls for Corbyn to do the impossible by telling the S*n that “I expect Jeremy to show true leadership, which means calling out individuals at times by name to say what they are doing it is unacceptable”, which would be hard in her case because even the police haven’t been able to establish the identity of the abuser. He is the only leader offering something different to business as usual.
He said: “I do not see the need for this change”.
“I think if you’re in the shadow cabinet in particular you’re going to get asked that question and you’ve either got to be able to go through that pretence of saying “Yes I think he can be prime minister, he’ll be a good prime minister” or not”.
The two MPs, who are friends, have nominated Mr Smith according to the party website although Corbyn is favourite to be re-elected as leader when the result is announced at the party conference in Liverpool on September 24.
Overall, Mr Corbyn was viewed favourably by 22.3 per cent of voters and unfavourably by 53 per cent.
Although three members of the original line-up have left in recent years, sparking a legal dispute over the use of the band’s name, the remaining members led by guitarist and vocalist Robin Campbell have endorsed Mr Corbyn.
In the case of Ellesmere Port MP Mr Madders the scenario is particularly embarrassing as he is in Corbyn’s shadow cabinet with a health portfolio and his own Ellesmere Port & Neston Constituency Labour Party has nominated Corbyn.
The Scottish National Party’s Nicola Sturgeon polled as the second most popular leader with a rating of minus-11, ahead of the Liberal Democrats’ Tim Farron on minus-12.
