England manager Sam Allardyce seems incapable of managing Wayne Rooney

Allardyce, who offered the central defender John Stones praise for his performance, employed Rooney in midfield, allowing him the leeway to read the game and determine where best he could exert his influence.

England captain Wayne Rooney insists a midfield role suits him at global level, having helped his side to a World Cup qualifying win over Slovakia.

Slovakia coach Jan Kozak felt his team’s display had set the tone for the rest of their Group F campaign.

England beat Slovakia 1-0 but Shearer was unhappy with the performance.

“As the game went on and they went down to 10 men we did create chances and sometimes you’ve got to stick it out until the last minute, and thankfully today we got the goal”.

“Of course it was a disappointing moment in the summer but it’s football, it’s what makes and breaks you as a player”.

But there was just enough left in the tank for England to snatch a late win and move on from their Euro 2016 humiliation at the hands of Iceland as Lallana, who had earlier hit the post before a Theo Walcott strike was ruled out for offside, struck his first global goal.

Nevertheless, for Allardyce to claim that he can play “wherever he wants” and that “it’s not for him to say where he’s going to play” is just plain wrong.

“I think I didn’t score in my first 7 or 8 games for Spurs last season, but I then went on to win the Golden Boot”. “I’m happy. It was good for Mueller to get the goal and good for us”.

“It’s up to me to (ask): ‘Are you playing well in that position?” It’s not a big thing and I think there’s a big over-reaction to it. He’s won everything at United, more or less, and at Champions League and domestic level. “It was pretty nerve-racking at the end because the 10-men scenario meant we had to win”, Allardyce said. I know that if I continue doing what I am doing the goals will come, that is all I can do. It was not pretty and and somewhat hard for a team who played with one man up when Slovakian’ captain Martin Skrtel a few instants after the hour-mark.

Allardyce rejected the notion that the team were “damaged” by their experiences in France but admitted they struggled to express themselves in his first match as manager.

“[The one that hit the post] was a great effort, but it was just unlucky and we kept plugging away”.
